A Man Is Only as Good as His Word
You’ve probably heard it said, “A man is only as good as his word.” It’s praise for integrity, and there’s truth in it. Jesus said, “Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil” (Matthew 5:37).
But I think a better version changes one letter: a man is only as good as His Word.
Our Word Has a Weak Foundation
The problem with the old saying is the source. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9). If my word flows from my heart, it can’t be the foundation of my life. Even good men forget, change their minds, and fail.
His Word Never Fails
God is different. “God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind” (Numbers 23:19). “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever” (Isaiah 40:8).
That’s why a wise man builds on it. Jesus said, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock” (Matthew 7:24). Both builders heard. Only one obeyed, and the storm showed the difference.
The psalmist shows how this works day to day: “How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word” (Psalm 119:9).
Knowing the Bible Isn’t Enough
This doesn’t mean a man is good because he knows a lot of Scripture. The religious leaders of Jesus’ day knew it well, yet He told them, “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me” (John 5:39).
John tells us who the Word really is: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). The Greek term is logos, meaning word or message. “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). Jesus Himself is God’s Word to us.
That matters because “no one is good except God alone” (Mark 10:18). We don’t become good through effort or Bible knowledge. We become righteous by being joined to Christ. “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
Building on His Word
First Christ, the living Word, makes us new. Then Scripture, the written Word, equips us “for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:17). Over time, our yes starts to mean yes because our hearts are being changed by the One who has never broken a promise.
So keep your word. But build your life on His.
A man is only as good as His Word.
