The Importance of Being Teachable

A heart that stays teachable is a heart that keeps growing in the Lord. “Always be teachable.” This is a quote I’ve heard a few times, and it really does hit me hard. I have noticed that I am not always the most receptive to correction and direction.

Apollos Listened

In Acts 18:24-26, we meet Apollos. He was eloquent, knew the Scriptures well, and spoke boldly about Jesus. But he only knew the baptism of John. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained the way of God more accurately. Apollos listened. Then he went on to greatly help the believers in Achaia, showing from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ (Acts 18:27-28). His willingness to be taught made him even more useful for the gospel.

I know the Lord tells us to always be ready to learn (Proverbs 9:9), especially from someone in the faith who is stronger and maybe has been a Christian longer than you.

More recently, I have been trying hard to learn things. I watch instructive videos and do things that help me expand my knowledge and understanding of things I do quite a bit but don’t fully understand.

Teachable Through the Word

I know digging into the Word and reading the Bible daily is one of the ways you can always be teachable. When I was doing my daily readings more often earlier this year, I noticed I was catching a lot more little stories and little things. Then I would find rabbit holes to dig into so I could learn more about that topic, that specific situation, or the way it was said. That was something I really loved, and I need to get back to it.

Lord, help me to take time and absorb your Word and all the things you’re trying to do. Help me to be teachable, especially when it comes to things that are from you. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Every bit of Creation points back to its Maker. This one points to Acts 18:26:

“He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.” (Acts 18:26)
